The Hazardous Substances – Employee Awareness Program has been designed to introduce employees to some of the considerations they must give to working with any hazardous or potentially hazardous substance in their place of work.
All substances have the potential to harm workers and the environment, some immediately and in very direct ways, others as a result of prolonged exposure over a period of time. Some substances are fairly innocuous in normal circumstances, but may have extremely harmful effects on workers who may have allergic or other health conditions.
The program contains activities throughout. These are designed to take participants step by step through the process of assessing the hazards associated with substances found in their own workplace, and to develop their skills in reading and understanding safety documents associated with those substances.
By the end of the program participants should be able to look for the necessary information on safe working and storage and to follow the instructions issued by their employer in respect of any substance in the workplace. A short series of assessment questions are provided to help participants plan their study. It is not an examination and should not be regarded as such.
This program is aimed at all persons who are in work. This includes full and part time employees, trainees, and students on work placements, volunteers and any others who may have authorized business in a place of work.
The program is designed so that participants
can work on it at their own pace and at times when it is most convenient for
them. Participants can return to the
program as often as necessary to either complete the programme or to review
elements within it.
